Help Discharging quickly

Have a Samsung Galaxy Apollo GT-I5800 (presumably unlocked) bought from Carphone Warehouse in UK in June this year into which my o2 SIM was put.

I have a few problems, but one at a time :)

I'll have it fully charged and it will run down with use (I understand all Smartphones do this quickly) to 50% (as shown by Battery Indicator app), then suddenly go to 5% with no further use, with the charge warning and dimmed display. On connecting the charger it immediately shows 50% then a few seconds later 60% then quite quickly (1-1.5 hours) is at 100%.

This happens maybe once a week, but other times it runs to 30% then to 15% at which point it indicates the need for recharging, but will go on for a good while in use to 5%. If I then connect the charger at either 15 or 5% it takes longer to 100% (3hours or so).

I should add it runs Android 2.1 Update 1. Is there any sort of fix for this issue please? I have no idea or can find no way how anything can be updated, if that is the answer.

Many thanks.
