Disconnecting and reconnecting while charging. EXTREMELY ANNOYING

pool

Lurker
So I bought my s5 used, it was mint when I got it and the only complaints I have are related to charging. Yesterday it started doing this extremely annoying thing while its plugged in. as soon as I touch it, it disconnects and reconnects, making a noise and telling me to check the cover. I cant even use the phone unless its unplugged as everytime it does that a window pops up on my laptop aswell so I have to close like 50 windows :(

Im pretty sure its something physically wrong because like I said it does it when I handle it. What should I do? Should I send it off to samsung? Or take it to a local repair shop?

Start with the obvious, try a different charging cable. You can also try blowing some canned air into the port on the phone in case there is any dirt in it causing contact problems. If after doing these things the problem persists then it's very possible you have a bad charging port. The port can be replaced but it requires some disassembly and tinkering which you may or may not be comfortable with, so it will be up to you whether to attempt it yourself or have it done professionally. As for whether to use Samsung repair or a local shop, that is a personal choice but if you use a local shop do some homework and make sure they are reputable before handing your phone over to them. And wherever you send it for repair, should you choose to do so, it's a good idea to back up your data and do a factory reset before you hand it off, and of course remove the SD card if you have one in there. That way none of your personal data can be compromised while it's out of your hands, and if it gets trashed somehow you have a backup.

I would suspect the charger and/or the cord first of all, and try another one. I've had them do that before, moving the phone causes it to intermittently disconnect.

you have one of those cheap 39 cent charging cords, and the connectors are not worth the time to take them out of the box.

buy a very good cord that has a Gold plated connector on it, and it must have the two little ridges on top of it to force the contacts down onto the mating contacts in the phone.

I have gone thru your experience many times, and it is always the fragile piece of shit junk that comes from china that is the culprit.

my best cords seem to come from Korea, but most of them don't even say where they came from.

the very best ones I have found were in my local O'Reilly's auto supply store. they have a heavy cloth tight weave fabric around the cord, with a very solid connector with Gold plating and the ridges I just described. they are NOT cheap, will run upwards of $20 bux each....

but, they work, and the problems you speak of are gone.

I buy the ones from O'Reilly's because of the quality and they are six feet long!
I can keep the charger plugged in, sit in my recliner, and use the phone all day long hooked up to the charger cord if needed.

I have not found a single cord from Best Buy that even comes close to these.
