Distribution list - best approach for a Google-centric user?

For the upcoming High School football season I need to communicate regularly with a group of about 30 people, all of whom I have email addresses for. It's primarily going to be one-way communication (me to them), but will need to work both ways. I don't have an account on Facebook or Twitter, and considering what I know about how to use it I might as well have never used Google Plus either. Basically, I'm an old fart who knows squat about social networking.

Not expecting long-term communication with most of the group, I didn't want to create a group in my contacts, as this would require adding all the people to my contacts, I setup a Circle in Google Plus and added everyone. I did this after reading how to (with several clicks in Gmail) send an email to everyone in a circle. In doing this I believe I found out that most of them aren't using Google Plus. My concern is that I can only send email to the circle from the desktop (as far as I know).

Any suggestions on the best way to handle this would be appreciated.

AFAIK, emailing people is a one time thing with G+ telling them to sign up. After they sign up, you use the messaging part of G+. The Messenger section does allow circles on mobile.
