hello people im planning to buy the upcoming zenfone 5 this year, but i read that 5g network might be out in 2019, is this true? if it is i think its really a bad move for chipset makers to have their chips not support 5g in 2018, because if 5g does come out in 2019 our phones in 2018 won't use it making them outdated already after 1 year. imagine spending big money on flagships like s9 and note 9 and if they're not 5g support its already outdated 1 year later, it wont feel you get what you pay much. but i hear that new chipsets at least support gigabit LTE and its like "4.5g" but not 5g, will this run 5g? can someone enlighten me about this? thank you!

Are you talking about 5Ghz WiFi or 5G mobile networks.

In both cases the answer is no, but most phones will do the WiFi, and nobody really has a 5g phone network deployed anywhere. And there's no agreement on what 5G actually is yet.

Are the specs for 5G even finalized and standardized yet? I know some carriers have been testing 5G network technologies, and there are chipset makers touting proposed their 5G technologies. Myself I would't worry about it for this year's smart-phones using currently available chip-sets. It took a number of years for 4G LTE to become fully established, and even then there's two specifications of that being used, FD-LTE and TD-LTE, the latter is mainly used in China, and some other Asian countries.

Nobody knows what it's going to be yet, or if it's even going to be used for the cell networks for things like smartphones and tablets. There's a multitude of applications that 5G could be used for, but like the other posters have said, we're not even close to having an industry standard yet. Don't let things possible future technology influence your decisions.

Both ATT and Sprint have announced their "pilot cities" for the 2018 roll out. If you search for it you'll find the press releases.
