do i have a defective battery?

so i bought my samsung galaxy s3 last month. absolutely love the phone. my battery life on the other hand is awful. i do not get a full day and thats with minimal use.

for example: i unplugged my phone at 10am today. i checked facebook and some text messages for a total of 10 minutes throughout the day up until right now 1:46pm. so we are talking almost 4 hours from being unplugged.

i am now down to 68%. my screen brightness is 40%. the battery shows that the most draining is coming from the android system at 47%, next is cell standby at 25%, and next is android os at 12%.

i dont understand what exactly is causing this. i am using nova launcher with one widget (weather.com). not using a live wallpaper either.

should i make the call to samsung to get them to ship me a new battery?

The Android system drain being so high points to a problem. You most likely have wakelock issues.

If you download "Better Battery Stats" from the play store, charge your battery up to full then let it discharge as it normally would again, that app will be able to tell you, in detail, exactly what is causing your battery drain and we should be able to give you some tips to make it last longer.

thanks for the advice. i am a little hesitant though because according to reviews, especially with this device, there is constant requests to allow for root access and the app is also $2.89.

if i am going to commit the price, i want to make sure i won't have any problems. i don't wish to root my phone, unless of course you would recommend it?

Such requests will only show up if you're actually rooted. I don't see any requests for root access at all.

Unfortunately I don't know of any free alternatives to BBS, but I swear by it.. it's a great app :)

I would say the best thing I've done to this phone is rooting it. After I removed all bloatwares, the battery seems to last longer and bootup faster too.
