do I need sync on to get gmail emails incoming notificaion ?

do i need sync enabled to get gmail incoming email notification ?

can i get notification without having sync on ? just to save battery

for example yahoo mail doesn't need sync to get notification

well if sync isnt on, gmail wont retrieve any new emails so im pretty sure that would mean you wont get any notifications

i have never used yahoo mail so i dont know about it...is it possible that even though sync is turned off that yahoo mail is still syncing on its own somehow?

but i have sync almost always sync ->to my google account
but when are my data stored ?
i mean when i login on my google account via desktop , can't find my contacts for example
in short i can find nothing

what do i do wrong ?
