Do themes and widgets sometimes contain malware?

Hi, I am new to Android. I am considering to get a launcher for my Galaxy Note. There are launchers that have tones of themes and widgets. For example Go Launcher EX. I read that to avoid malware, virus, torjan, etc., we have to be careful about downloading/installing apps of low ratings and unknown sources. Do we have to be careful with the themes and widgets as well? Thanks.

One of our Mods wrote up this post, I highly recommend it:

Basically, to help avoid malware, the takeaway is to only download and install apps from trustworthy developers that have a high rating. Skim through some of the reviews, and if any mention Air pushed ads or extreme bugginess, run away.
Go Launcher is fantastic, I've used it in the past. ADW is also a great alternative.

Yes they do. I had a Philadelphia Flyers wallpaper that continually notified me of a cirtical battery update which was malware. I used the Addons Detector to troubleshoot what app was doing it.
