Does a full internal memory affect performance?

Hi, everyone.

I'm wondering whether if an android phone has only 5% of it's internal storage left would it negatively affect the performance of the phone or not. From what I've read, one of the main causes of lags is a full internal memory-which is true during the Gingerbread days 5-6 years ago as I remember it. Now I'm wondering whether the same issue also happen in Nougat.

I wonder because I've been running out of free space lately on my Oppo A71 which has 16GB of internal storage. I'm losing space because I cannot move apps to my 16GB class 10 V-Gen SD card(external). I can't do it by default(can anyone please help me to solve this? On my old Samsung phone I can easily move apps to external SD and vice versa)so I tried to use a third-party app and the app tells me something like "sd card share the same disk with OS bla bla". That's the first reason. The second reason is because I didn't know there are many fantastic mobile games around. I didn't have any plan to play games when I bought this phone for if I did I would've bought one with bigger internal storage. Interestingly, I so far do not see any major lag or performance drop every now and then. It works just as smoothly as ever. However, I feel like I do see a few small lags now and then. I wonder if that's the effect of the full internal storage or maybe it's just the way it is and it didn't bug me before as I didn't notice.

Sorry for the long post. Thank you.
