Root Does adding custom roms corrupt android?

Hello. Is installing custom roms bad for android? On my last two 'upgrades', I get a severe reduction in performance & I'm pulling my hair out over it. These were installed as per instructions, with the necessary delete cache / dalvik / fix permissions, before & after. Apps have been sacrificed or moved to SD. Settings explored to maximise RAM, changed the launcher, only a couple of widgets. I use a cache cleaner but no task manager. There's no virus or push notification things.

Is this a limitation of older phones not taking Jelly Bean based roms? I got this reduction in performance after installing AOKP & then Paranoid Android. Before that was CM9 which seemed to run much better.

My gut feeling is that older phones can't take the later custom roms, that it's all a bit 'pie in the sky'. I also think constant flashing of roms may not be good for the phone. Perhaps I need to downgrade?

Aye cheers, but my questions were about adding new roms to old phones (generic).

These custom roms are mongrel creations made with dev wizardry so you end up with something that is Jelly Bean but has ICS kernel. I think some of these custom roms are 'not quite there' & devs abandon them (still with bugs or things missing) too quickly to move on to the next project.

I don't wish to appear ungrateful it's just very time consuming installing a new rom, reinstalling apps & settings only to find you need to revert back or try another.

Sorry to here your having so much trouble with roms.

My phone, (3year old LG Optimus V)has improved tremendously, it's faster, much more stable, but its only gingerbread 2.3.7and the dev still looks after it, even though he has moved on to a different device.

We also have a jellybean rom that's just as good, also still in development which runs fantastic, the only reason i'm not running it is because it requires running a bigger sdcard and links2sd. I don't have a computer to transfer data to the bigger sdcard but if i did i sure would be running jellybean.

You need to find a rom for your device that the dev is still active with it, or someone who continues to keep it updated.

My phone has never been better than it is right now!

Good luck. :)

EDIT : YOU have to make sure you wipe things properly and check Md5 sums so there is no corruption, which will cause performance issues and little glitches.

Cheers, I went back to GB (CM7, stable) & all is fine. Actually there were some things I missed from CM7 so glad to be back :).
