For me it does. I have a long story (below), and it feels like I'm back in Windows 3.1/Mac 9x era where the programs (now apps) cause the OS to crash. With current Windows and Mac OS, the system almost never crashes, and this is what I would expect of Android. Here's my 10 month saga:
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab (their first 7", not the Plus nor 7.7) from Verizon (I think Android 2.3, but I'm not sure where to verify this). The operating system crashes at least every week or two. Sometimes the crash is a complete shut-down, other times it just freezes. I do occasionally have apps that crash, and I understand and accept that this will happen, especially with free apps (I use both paid and free apps). It's the frequent OS crash that I find unacceptable.
When I first called Verizon repairs, they walked me through clearing the cache and a few other "simple repairs." I waited a week or two and it crashed again. Called back Verizon and they had me reset the tablet to its factory settings ("hard reset," or some name like that). Tried it for a couple days with no additional apps, then installed Google only apps. Started crashing again.
The most bothersome is when I'm using Google Navigate. One time I drove five miles past my freeway exit before I noticed that the device had frozen. One time, before I started Navigator, I went to Applications... Running Services... and shut down all the apps that I had installed that were running (I left any that I didn't know what they were, e.g. those with the Android icon). Then I set up my Navigation and after about 30 minutes on the road, the system shut itself down. This was on my second device (see below).
I have sent the device in twice for repairs (which, according to Verizon/Samsung policy, means I have to live without it for two to three weeks while they ground ship it). The first time it went in for repairs, they sent me back the original tablet (I had a screen protector on it, which came back, so I knew it was my original). That was last August.
Use it some more, and it starts crashing again. More calls with Verizon, I sent it in again in January, and this time I got back a new device (although Samsung has no record of this in their repair center, although Verizon claims that all repairs go through Samsung, but Samsung does have two ESN numbers associated with my account).
Still same problems. Samsung says I need to send it back again (up until yesterday, all my communications had been with Verizon, but they finally conference called me with Samsung).
So, my question to the community is: Did I get two lemons in a row, or is the Android OS such a bad memory manager that apps can cause it to crash?
I am clearly very frustrated, and tempted to move over to the iOS side, although I really like the 7" form and the apps I have paid for. Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
