Does installing an app run it?

Does installing an Android app run it (even as a service in the background) or does it just sit there until I open it? I'm afraid of an app being accidentally installed and having it run without my permission.

Depends on the app and possibly how you set options in it. Is there a particular app you have in mind?

Nothing can be installed accidentally. You must allow installation.
