Does Skype work in Canada?

Hi all,

I'm on the Rogers network in Canada (with a voice and data plan) but I cannot seem to get Skype Beta (version 1.0.0.5) to work. Every time I try to login I get this error:
"Skype couldn't connect over your phone connection"

I can use the same login/password on Skype on my computer and it works fine. Maybe I'm entering my phone number incorrectly? I have tried various combinations, including the format below:

+1 613 xxx xxxx

Has anyone on the Rogers network been able to get Skype to work?

I am also looking for an answer to this. I want to rock the WIFI/SKYPE cheap calling option. I get the same error as above.

Make sure you grab the most recent version of Skype at Skype: download Skype Lite for mobile, and your connection type is HTTP.

OK, I have figured this out!

When you are entering your phone number, you MUST put the number in the following format:
+1234567899

Do NOT put any spaces in the phone number, or you will get a connection error. I kind of feel ******** for not doing this originally, but at the same time the "Skype couldn't connect over your phone connection" error message is an epic common-sense-fail.

Here's a couple more Skype "features" that I've learned:
1) Skype calls are NOT VOIP. Skype calls actually use your minutes, so you will be charged. That being said, from what I understand, all skype calls are routed to a single local phone number, meaning that you can add that number to your My5, and you can have free unlimited calling

2) Skype to Skype calling appears to be disabled, when I click on a Skype contact, there is no "Call" button, but when I click on a contact who has a phone number (Canadian or American number) I clearly see a button that says "Call"

In summary...this is not very impressive software. Hopefully they'll fix it soon.

I'm in the same boat. Thanks for your discoveries. How do you find out what the local number is that Skype uses, in order to add it to your MY5?

I can not beleive how badly Canadians are treated. You are right on our borders not to mention how polite you people are. A LOT of people are getting FED UP WITH SKYPE. I gave up on them. I now use SIPDROID with Gismo5 and TPad to make cheap calls from Vietnam to the USA. Check out sipdroid - SIP/VoIP client for Android
