Help Does the Droid 2 need a 3G/Phone Connection or WIFI for SMS??

I don't have a Droid 2 but I'm asking for a friend. I have a different phone on a different carrier and thought this question might be phone/carrier specific...

Does one need a phone/3G connection to make and receive SMS messages or will only a WIFI connection suffice?? My friend will be traveling to a VERY bad "cell area" but will have a wifi connection and was wondering what will be the effect on sending and receiving SMS messages??

I would also like to know about MMS messages?? I have heard some people NEED a phone/3G connection and others do not but I have never confirmed what is required.

You do not need 3g for SMS, but you do need cell reception. You do need data for MMS.

If the person really needs to send receives texts on WiFi only, look into Google Voice. It is free and will send texts using the data connection but will have a different phone number.

It is a free service in the Market. You can text through wifi or 3G connection.

I live in an area with bad cell connection and use this service to text people. You can text across Canada and USA for free.
