does the number of Ram affect the gaming performance of phone?

so the Oppo F7 youth is just announced here in philippines but it will only be available in 4 Ram. someone suggested me choose the 6 ram if realme 1 becomes available. i heard that ram affects maintaining background running apps, is this the only purpose of ram? i only need the great gaming performance for mid-range phone what are the things affected my Ram? thank you!

If the OS is set up properly more ram can increase the number of apps that can be kept in memory (most will be dormant rather than running). There have been cases where manufacturers put a large amount of ram in but misconfigured the memory management so that much of it sits empty an unused, in which case all it would do is drain a bit more power for no benefit (and, of course, act as a marketing tool).

As long as you have sufficient for the game it should make little difference to performance of the game itself.

It depends on the game, some may not use above certain MB/GB of ram. If you run bunch of background apps, I suppose more ram would help.
