Help Does your FB Messenger app have to be active for you to receive notifications?

As far as notifications go, I am really missing my iPhone!!

If the application is CLOSED: I am not receiving any Facebook Messenger notifications at all when the phone is locked and sleeping. If I unlock the phone and someone sends me a message on FB then I will receive the notification and FB Messenger will pop up.

If the application is OPEN: I will receive notifications when the phone is locked and sleeping as well ass when unlocked and awake.

Why is this? Why do I not just receive notifications whether the app is open or closed at all times?????

The SAME thing happens with Microsoft Lync which I use for work. If Lync is not open, I will NEVER receive notifications. It has to be open!!

Why can Apple figure this out and Samsung cannot?
Notifications are very important to me.

Open the app, go to settings and make sure push notifications is checked. I'm not sure why it would default to off, but I don't have this issue with my GS3. Also, if you're using slidelock, you may need to go into the slidelock settings and select those apps to push notifications to your lock screen.

Welcome to the double edged sword of customization, set stuff up however you want, just make sure you actually set it up :) I know with apple, you're just used to everything being one way and not dealing with it. Spend a little time with your phone exploring settings when things don't work how you want them to. Likely you'll be able to set it up how you want without much effort.

Yes I have the notifications on and when I have the app actually running it does push the notifications to my lock screen. However, lets say I just turn my phone off and then turn it back on. If I don't actually go and open FB Messenger, it will not push any notifications to me at all unless the phone is unlocked and active. (example: i am playing a game or something nothing to do with FB messenger, it will ding and say there is a message.)

did you find a fix for this? I am having the same problem, with my Sprint S5, but not only do I not get my FB notifications...I am not getting any(snapchat, foursquare, my milk radio shut downs when the phone locks, actually my texts are hit or miss)

I would also check your power settings. I'm not sure what measures the S5 takes, but when I use the app Juice Defender, one of the settings is that it turns off all connectivity when the screen is off. Which means you don't get notifications, except for a set interval at which it turns on the connections to get updates in the background.

TW might do something similar with one of the power settings.

Mittar! you are the best...so under power saving it was blocking background data...I turned that off...restarted the phone...everything seems to be working! thank you so much
