Help don't want messenger

You don't need Messenger unless you want to send messages. They separated messaging from the main FB app at least a year ago, presumably because they thought that a single app wasn't hogging enough of your phone's resources.

If you do then your options are to use Messenger or to use a browser and request the desktop site (they've removed it from the mobile site). You can use a wrapper like Tinfoil for Facebook if you like, but you still need to tell it you want the desktop view.

The Facebook app on Android requires you to install Messenger also, there is no option not to. The only work around is to use an app such as Metal, Tinfoil, or Facebook Lite, or just login from your browser on Android

Personally I did not use the Facebook app and do not have or want the messenger app. But I do need to have access to messages people send me.

The work around is simple, find a browser such as chrome that has a built in ability to request the desktop version of a website. (Or find the link at the bottom of the Facebook page, very hard to find)

Load up Facebook, click on the friends tab, now request to load the desktop version of the site. On chrome it's the 3dot options button, request desktop site. The site reloads, now click on the messages tab and you can view and send messages without the pop-up that sends you to the playstore.

Yes you can do it thru a browser or install an older version
I kept mine at version 3.7 it works and still allows messaging from itself and does not require the other app
