Double characters when using terminals

On my Android tablet, anytime I use my external keyboard with a terminal application, I get double letters for each key I press. I don't see this behavior in other applications, just terminals (e.g. Better Terminal Emulator, Android Terminal Emulator, etc).

Why would I only see double characters on terminal applications, and how can I resolve it?
