Downloading a link via the Android browser?

This question concerns the Android browser on a Nexus One.

How do I tell the Android browser to download the item that a link points to instead of just viewing it in the browser? The item in question is a jpeg image that I put onto a site that I control. I want to download that image file to my Nexus one, but I can't find any way to do that. The only thing I can make the browser do is display the image.

Am I missing something obvious?

If you long press an image in the browser, the option to save it or view it appears, select save and it will download

Aha! So I have to first view the image, and then long-press it. Thank you.

But this begs a related question: what if the link doesn't point to an image? What if it's a link that points to something else that the browser normally displays, such as a web page? In desktop browsers, there's a way to click on a link in a non-standard way (such as right-clicking), at which point a menu comes up with the option to save the item that the link points to, instead of displaying it.

Does the Android browser only allow us to save images and non-displayable items, and does it lack an option for saving _all_ web content?

Can't speak to how it works on other phones, but on the Nexus One if you highlight a given link using the trackball and then long-press the trackball you get a menu, one of whose options is "save link," just like right-click on desktop browsers.
