Droid 2.1 is here

and the only way skype would be useful is if it also allowed video calls...and we can't do that until someone makes a cam that rotates to the front, or a cam add-on through the usb port.

So I spent over an hour today talking with verizon about not getting the update, they cannot force send. They told me if I did not update I would be included in the next group sent the update. Apparently these go out at noon and midnight daily. They completely overlooked that I told them its been two days since I got the message and have not gotten another. Noon came and went, no update for me. Looks like I'm going to return this POS, customer service with verizon is the worst of any cell phone company I've ever had.

Waaaaaa. The update isn't that big of a deal anyway. If you are going to return the phone because of the update maybe the Iphone is the one for you.

You're right Cuda, I should just be happy not getting what everyone else gets because the droid is sooooo F'n cool. Why should I have access to my yahoo account, or pinch to zoom, or expect tech support for a $300 phone to have answers. I'll just sit back and turn my phone on and off so I can look at the red glowing eye and feel superior to people with lesser cell phones.

Is there an update coming that will give us hands free voice dialing? In Washington state it is illegal to interact with the phone while driving. Even cheap phones can do this.

I wouldn't freak out about missing out on the update. It's nothing special really, I'm not sure if I use anything that came with it, except maybe the pinch zoom occasionally and it's not really that exciting. If you want it so bad, do what I did and manually install it following the link and directions posted above. It took like 2 minutes.

Doesn't 2.1 have voice typing for all text fields like the Nexus One has? For example you can send a text msg or e-mail by talking instead of typing. I would think that would be pretty big.

Verizon supposedly spent 100 Million on an Ad campaign for the Droid. They are not going to change the interface in anyway when every commercial demonstrates a specific UI.

I'm sorry but Verizon has had the MOST AWESOME support overall. I did last month get one idiot, but I just hung up on him and called back and got someone with a brain. Typically though I find it's faster and better in person so I will run into the store--they are great and ALWAYS go a step beyond to help. If I don't understand a feature they are great to walk me through it on the spot--they really know their stuff, but then I do live in one of the largest cities in the country and there's a lot of high tech here, so maybe location has some part in it??

Sorry you're having issues, hope you get it sorted out soon!

I just figured out how to do this on yesterday, and I don't have the udpate yet!

I use an application called Helix Launcher that gives me 5 home screens, and you don't need to modify the phone in any way to do so. Just download "Helix Launcher (FREE)" from the Market.

Your applications are all retained and 2.1 is backwards compatible, if the applications worked with your device before they should work with your device running 2.1.

Some of the differences include multitouch in the browser (pinch to zoom) and Live Wallpapers, long tap on your home screen in an empty area and go to Wallpapers, then Live Wallpapers, then choose the LWP you want to use (I chose Neural Network because it looks awesome).
I have an HTC Rhodium(TIlt 2) and now have the XDANDROID installed. I really like the live wallpaper. My Android version is 2.1 with Eclair. I didnt notice the pinch to zoom feature. not sure if itll work since my screen uses Resistive tech. It is really amazing how i have a windows mobile and now Android(although everything not workn yet, but good enough..lol). I like how the app store is set up. It lets me download and install APK. programs/files. Once i put this Dual Boot in, ill pick which rom or whatever on da fly. Im glad i came across this forum to find out the latest on Android. Time for some new apps/features depending on what will work with the XDANDROID that i have. Its the newest release. i was wondering what that Helix launcher was. Im going to make sure to grab it now. Sorry to rant but just Amazed about how i can run wm 6.5 and Android 2.1 on the same device. ;)

i have a Droid Eris and i was wondering if i can get the 2.1 update with out rooting my phone and voiding my warranty?

Nope. If you install the leak it technically violates your warranty. HOWEVER. We don't know if the official 2.1 update will still install or not on eris phones. I have one too, and I installed the leak. Works GREAT! I'd imagine whenever the OTA finally does happen, someone here will make a ROM of it, the Eris owners will install it, and everyone will go home happy with their warranties intact.
