Droid 2 - Tips and Tricks - Android Forums is a great place for a newcomer to start.

Apps are quite user-subjective, of course. Try going into the Market app on your device and looking at the most popular ones that come up, free and paid, categorized by "tools," "games," etc. Do searches in there on words that describe what you need, "weather," "file manager," etc.
