Droid Forgets Contacts?

Hey everyone. For some reason, occasionally my droid will delete many of my recently added contacts.

I have no clue why it does this. I dont believe it has anything to do with facebook or gmail contacts.

It is possible that I placed it back in my pocket without locking the screen and somehow I selected some weird option???

This is like the 3rd time it has happened and if it weren't for my text messages with some important people I wouldve lost their info.

Not sure who else Ive lost.

Is there a way to permanently backup my contacts? Thankyou
 
can someone please respond to this before i lose my contacts once again?

and if no one has an answer. then idk why but my phone doesnt notify me when i get voicemails.... how do i change this setting?
 
FWIW, I got a HTC magic recently and used google contacts to transfer all mine from the previous phone. That was fine but if I entered a new one on the phone (either manually or saving a missed call) it disappeared minutes later. A factory reset cured this, and all my google contacts automagically reappeared as soon as I connected it.
