Droid M battery shows battery with a question mark symbol

Bought new battery for Droid M and when put it in cell phone it shows a gray battery with a question mark symbol in it. What does this mean?

This means the phone cannot communicate with the battery. This is a problem with many aftermarket batteries. I would suggest checking with the battery manufacturer for a solution or replacement. The only other time I have seen this is with Motorola devices when using an aftermarket charger...
