Droid native picture viewer is pathetic!

Just got around to trying the built in photo viewer in Droid accessed through gallery, and what a disappointment! It is frankly a joke.

Just tried free app 'picture viewer' and it's better, but still not great.

Going to keep looking. What I am looking for is to flick through photos, which picture viewer does, but also being able to pan around pic if zoomed in. Also automatic search of SD card for folders with pictures. PV makes you type in path.
Come on!

The included viewer in Astro file manager is almost a decent viewer. Certainly better than the built in one, which again, so bad, it's almost funny.

Still looking. Hoping someone will jump in here with a good one.

Ya i have been looking for one too.

I saw picture viewer and its nice but i wish it had a thumbnail gallery of some sort.

Astro has the best photo viewer that i've seen. Its fast, has thumbnails below the picture, and can rotate pic in all directions....

but the problems are that it cannot zoom in/out, the share feature doesnt work correctly (doesnt choose the right image to share), and i also dont like how i have to open a file browser to look for the photos each time.

like you said, im looking for something that will auto find the pics on the SD card.

anyone find any good app with most of the following things?

1. thumbnail gallery
2. zoom in/out
3. choose directory of imgs or auto search SD card
4. Slide finger to change pictures would be a plus
5. has a good, working, Share feature.

Thanks in advance!

i tried picture viewer but i did not like how there was not a thumbnail gallery to choose from.

after searching through other forums i found "photo burst".

This is probably the best Photo Gallery I have found. So many options and pretty much covers all the bullets from my last post.

Trial version is limited to 10 pictures tho... im thinking about buying the full version for UK

Use the native gallery, long press a pane, choose slideshow and choose PV to launch (i have made it my default for now).

It will launch its slideshow. downside is that it is manual in that you need to flick through pics. But you can zoom in and pan. For sitting next to someone and showing some pics, not bad.

I am going to check out Photo Burst now.

BTW, are you on a Droid. some comments say PB problems on Droid.

Well, maybe someone will port over the HTC Album photo browser. This app is just about perfect for viewing/sorting/finding photos. I can get to all my albums easily (including FaceBook or Flikr), zooms smoothly, flicks easily. Just a very good app. And having the widget so you can flick through photos without launching an app is awesome.

This is one of the main reasons I went with the Droid Eris over the Droid. I suppose the photos would have looked a bit nicer on the larger screen, but it's so much easier to get to them and flip through them with this. And the other apps/widgets that are part of Sense UI are almost just as cool.

Does anyone know if the source code for the droid default gallery/slideshow is available? I've downloaded the droid SDK/development tools and would like to make some minor edits to the defauly application if possible. I like it for the most part but more than anything I'd like to see the images in max resolution so as to fit the screen, as an option at least. When I run the slideshow the images show up tiny and much of screen is unused! this is the weakest point on the droid i've seen so far.

Once 2.1 gets pushed, this discussion will be obsolete. I'm running Bugless Beast on my Droid which includes the new, revamped Gallery and trust me, it's amazing. It's literally no comparison to the current Gallery, it feels like it was rebuilt from the ground up to be awesome. I'd recommend just suffering through the default one for a little while longer until 2.1 gets pushed.

+1

I downloaded 700 + pictures from my Iphoto and they ended up in random date order. When I view them, the snowfall in December shows up next to the St. Thomas beach pictures--brought back so many good memories I booked another trip to St. Thomas but it didn't solve the problem of how to sort pics by date!

You don't have to wait for 2.1 to get the new Gallery, because a standalone .apk has been created that can be quickly installed on 2.01. Forum rules don't permit posting links to unreleased software here, but suffice it to say that "Google is your friend" if you're interested in it. As brohism says, the revamped Gallery does just about everything you're asking for. Compared to the current Gallery, about the only thing they have in common is the name!

BTW, it's interesting to note that the filename of the standalone .apk includes "com.cooliris...", which would suggest that Cooliris either wrote or at least had a hand in the new one. I've used the PC version of Cooliris for quite awhile, and the revamped Android Gallery definitely shows a family resemblance (that's a very positive thing, too!)

I'm running BB 2.1 and yes. The new gallery is WAY better. Just download the apk for 2.01 if you don't wish to root...

Is this the same version that's on the Nexus One? I.e., does it have the problem that it doesn't display full resolution when you zoom far in? (E.g., someone posted a .jpeg map of a ski area; you can read the trail names on a PC but the text is too pixelated to read after zooming in using Gallery on the Nexus One.) I've been using B&B Gallery from the market to get around that problem. It doesn't have the funky/weird tilting of the thumbnail display when you tilt the phone that's in the Nexus One gallery -- no big loss as far as I'm concerned -- but it works very well otherwise.

If the version you're talking about does fix the resolution problem, I'd like to give it a try.

Just to throw out that Beast comes with both the 2.1 gallery and the Milestone. Pete seems to really like the latter, I guess due to both multi touch (now supported in the 2.1), and the effects possible.

FLOATING IMAGE is a great image viewer and very fast and responsive. The dev is constantly updating. IMO it's the next best thing to the Gallery3D on the Nexus One.

See "Large Image Viewer" in App Lib. None of the apps mentioned above achieve full resolution zoom in on large images (5k by 5k, for example). This app does in the way expected (only images the visible tiles; recreates zoom in on other tiles as you pan around). Truly good for trail maps or other fine detail images you need to store and zoom to see detail. None of the other apps mentioned or found do this from my testing. Made by a google engineer; maybe it will get added to the default viewer for the future :)

I found "JustPictures!" to be about the best the Market has to offer for 2.1 users right now - not sure what Froyo will bring (I'll let you know if my DInc ever gets the upgrade). JustPictures! lets me view my Picassa and Facebook photos as well as the pics on my SD card. Only thing I'm missing is a nice big Widget.

I have the Samsung Galaxy S and the built in photo gallery whilst feeling slick like on the iphone suffers the same limitations as the iphone in that whilst it zooms in it soon pixelates. This is frustrating if you have taken a large image of a map or a menu outside a restaurant, especially when I have to Bluetooth my image onto my mates old n series Nokia who's gallery lets you zoom to the native resolution of images including huge ones taken with digital slr cameras which admittedly do slow the Nokia zoom function down a lot. So imagine how good the Nokia gallery program would be with a touch screen and a snapdragon processor behind it!

Just tried it out, best I've come across. Also had an added bonus. I'd been frustrated with the lack of a wallpaper directory to dump photos in and be able to browse through the Wallpaper Gallery, but thats no longer an issue since JustPictures adds itself as an option along with Live Wallpapers and the rest.

QuickPic is best for local pictures. However if you want to include your online photos, Just Pictures works great.
