Droid RAZR max touch screen not working w/ HDMI

When I plug my phone into my TV via an HDMI mini cable, it mirrors the phones screen almost flawlessly, but the touchscreen on the phone becomes practically inoperable. It won't scroll through the home screens at all and only after a long hold on an icon will an app open up. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
