Droid stolen... need replacement

So my Droid was snatched from me on the Metro(subway) today and it took me about 40 minutes before I could get to a computer to try to lock/track/wipe it via WaveSecure. Unfortunately, none of the commands were acknowledged, probably because the phone was off. I waited a couple more hours before finally suspending my account, hoping the thief would turn it on so it would get the WaveSecure commands via SMS. I have no hope of ever getting it back and I'm 7 months from upgrade eligibility so I picked up a TracFone so I can at least communicate with the wife until I decide what to replace the Droid with.

So... what do I replace it with that I won't hate after being spoiled with the goodness of CM6? I guess I'm wanting to hear from previous Droid owners and their experiences with the phones available now.

There's always the Droid2 and R2D2 but I'm really hating the post-Droid lockdowns on the Motos.

And why would anyone steal a smartphone nowadays, knowing its tracking capabilities and service brickability once it's reported stolen?

A skilled person can get around all that and resell a perfectly good working phone!

apparently not. what I thought was insurance from Best Buy was apparently just an extended warranty.

I get that someone could just do a hard reset on the phone (which I actually hope was done so my personal info is harder to get to) but I would think that anyone trying to activate service on it would get stopped because the ESN would be marked stolen.

ESN's are easily changed if one has the knowledge and equipment. People who steal phones are either not so smart and just trying to sell them online for parts, or they know what they're doing and they'll put in the work and sell a fully functional phone.

I know for sim based phone's its incredibly easy to circumvent pretty much all the protection you have.

I don't know about phone's that use the ESN system.. I imagine to keep you from being tracked it would be easy enough.. however, to make it functional again.. It is a grey area for me..

But, I would tend to agree with the above user.. The person either knows what they are doing and how to get away with it..

Or they are just an opportunist who is going to turn around and hock it.
