Droid without data plan

I just got my Droid X so I was planning on txfr my old Droid to my mom on my secondary line since she'd like to try it. I was planning on just killing the data and set it up to automatically jump on wifi at home and and open wifi elsewhere. The new 150MB plan is nice but I imagine more than she'll use for awhile.

One option I heard of is cloning the esn from the little samsung knack she currently has. Is this possible or are there any other options besides wasting $15 a month. Too bad the Pay-per-MB isn't so rediculous or I'd get away w/ just blocking data usage.

It's possible, but it's also illegal. According to the United States Sentencing Commission document below the maximum penalty is 15 years for a first time offender.

The chances of getting caught are slim to none and I doubt you'll get 15 years. But it's not worth the trouble if you ask me.
 
Verizon knows if an esn has been cloned, and there isn't anyway to remove the data plan on a smartphone its a manditory feature that cannot be removed..
 
Another option is to activate the phone on Page Plus (a Verizon MVNO). I have my son's LG Ally on Page Plus with data blocked. The only thing that doesn't work is MMS (it requires carrier data, and won't work with Wifi). You can get unlimited voice and SMS (+ 20MB data) for $45/mo, or 1200 minutes + 1200 SMS (+ 50MB data) for $30/mo, or you can pay by the minute/sms.
 
I always thought that their system will just re-add the data plan back if you try to remove it. Everywhere you look on their site states that smartphones require a data plan of sorts.
 
I definitely suggest going to PagePlus. They work on the VZW with VZW phones and you don't need data. so basically, you're not missing out on anything, except for MMS and high prices.
 
I use page plus and looking at a LG Ally, droid phone. Because the esn is bad, it is dirt cheap. What does a bad esn mean? I know what an ESN is, and this esn is bad on Verizon, so not sure if it will work on Page Plus?
Also, i do not want to pay for a data plan, and after reading, I was afraid it may pick up data and charge me. How do I block the data plan?
 
Beware of page plus. though their cell service is VZW their customer service is not. If you have an issue with your device you have to go to page plus for it to be sorted out. Verizon will not, in most cases, service a page plus customer even though their phone is branded with the Verizon logo. I have seen many page plus customers mad because their phone stopped working after they switched from verizon and verizon refused to replace it. If you do switch, make sure it's still under the manufacturer warranty

If you need to make a warranty claim, since you didn't get the phone through Page Plus, you'll have to take up the matter of the warranty directly with the manufacturer. It would be best to make sure you've got the receipt from when you purchased your device to ensure warranty coverage.
