So i went to verizon on launch day to pre order my new droid x. So i made friends with a verizon rep and we exchanged cell numbers and everything and he said he would help me out since i have an available upgrade and cash money. ( the owner of the account, grandfather, wont let me use my own money to upgrade contract.. I know right.). So he says he will have me one in soon.. So i call him about a week and a half later and he tells me i had to pay before he could order the phone. Yet he tells me this 10 days later after i went in and he got my cell number and told me he would get it in and call me when it came in... Wow is all i can say

How dare they want money before giving you something! The audacity!

You spoke to a salesman. Let this be a lesson learned.

go to wal mart and get one, thats what i did.
they had a few in stock.
upgraded there and then went to the verizon store to finish plan changes (walmart lady was clueless).

Walmart? seems a little odd.. Cost more?
verizon told me = $300 and i would get a $100 mail in rebate = $200
walmart = $200 right there, done. = $200

one walmart didnt work with verizon yet, the other did and had them.
there was also apparently an option for people who didnt have a smart phone yet to do an early upgrade without the $20 early upgrade fee.

walmart may have them in stock, but in this experience the wal mart person working was lacking in knowledge about technical stuff involving doing much more then the upgrade, so i just got the upgrade and got out with the phone without having to do the mail in rebate, at the same amount of money it would have cost me through verizon after waiting for the mail in rebate, without waiting on a back order.
then i went to a verizon store and finished setting up my plan the way i wanted it through them.

apparently walmart can offer the phones at a "discounted" rate = no mail in rebate = same cost. but their knowledge is lacking.

use them to get the phone avoiding the mail in rebate and out of stock back order stuff, then go to a verizon store to do any thing you want to your plan.

thats my experience.
