DropBox vs AirDroid

I've used DropBox for years and years. Out of curiosity, I just installed AirDroid on my PC and my droid. It seems to provide basically the same service as DropBox, the transmitted transfer of files from one side to the other... am I missing something?

I use Airdroid, mainly because it doesn't have to be online to wirelessly transfer things phone to computer etc, Also no Dropox in China unless using a VPN. You don't even have to make an account with Airdroid, if you're just using it locally.

But, those valid distinctions aside, if I'm already content with DropBox, there's no particular reason I'd need to have AirDroid running alongside?

Its just personal preference for what you want. If I were you, I would just stay on Dropbox since you said you've been using it for years. They all basically do the same thing. I use one called Box.

I think, on AirDroid you need to be connected to the same wifi network. With Dropbox, you can access the contents of your Dropbox anywhere you are with an internet connection.

AirDroid let's you read and send SMS on a PC while it's connected though.

That is how I use Airdroid. I don't have an account and no need for me to be putting stuff online, especially when I'm transferring >1GB movies. Just connect the PC's browser to the phone's IP address on the WiFi network.

Although sometimes I have found when using hotel WiFi, Airdroid can't make a direct connection between two devices on the same WiFi. because the hotel blocks it as a security measure. Basically to prevent guests' computers and devices from communicating with each other, and spreading viruses and worms.

Well, I got AD to transfer a photo file over the data connection on AD and DB, but didn't try that with wifi... but now I've poofed Airdroid from my systems, since y'all have answered my question.

Pardon my ignorance, but how do I learn my phone's IP address? Probably something I already know, or at least should.

When you start Airdroid on your phone it tells you.

Which here is 192.168.1.103:8888 ...and then that's just a direct connection between your phone and the web browser, not on the internet. "aoya english" is the SSID of our WiFi router.

The "web.airdroid.com" is for if you're using it via the internet, using their servers, and have an account.

Mike, do you recall an early uTuber named Mordeth? He had one of the original helmet-lens cameras and rode all over China when he wasn't teaching Engrish.
