Dual Band & Tri Band phones

Hi

Im a newbie to Android.
If mobile supports network frequency GSM 900/1800, it is a dual band phone.

But if it supports GSM 900/1800 and CDMA 2100Mhz , will it become a tri band phone ?

If a device supports both GSM and CDMA frequesncies, what will be its status about band.

Can anyone clarify my queries.

The first thing is, GSM, CDMA, WCDMA, LTE are all different standards, and should not be mixed together. So when determining whether a phone is dual/tri/quad band you should consider only one standard at a time. So for example, if a phone has GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA 900/1900/2100 it would be dual band GSM + tri-band WCDMA.

The example you quoted would be dual-band GSM plus single band CDMA. It would not be tri band, because there is no standard which is supported on more than two bands by that handset.

The second thing is that "CDMA" and "WCDMA" are different. They both use code-division multiplexing, but they are not compatible. "CDMA" refers to a technology used for 2G in some North American networks (and a very small number of others), while "WCDMA" is the 3G used in "GSM" networks (also called UMTS, if you come across that one).
