Help Dual band wifi doesn't connect on Androids with OS lower than 7.0

At the hostel, we have a wifi device outside our room. It emits both 5ghz and 2.4ghz wifi frequencies at the sametime.
The problem is that any Android phone with Android version lesser than 7.0 can't connect to the wifi while those with Android 7.0 easily connect to it. I can't understand why.
Is there a solution for this or we will have to change our cellphones.
Note: All iPhones are also unable to connect

I kind of don't have that luxury.
It's hostel's wifi device so this can't be done by me.
I am just unable to understand that why is this happening?. If anyone can pointout the problem.
 
Hi, with Android 6 and earlier you had three options in WiFi settings, Auto, 2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz. These options were removed with Android 7.

If your device is set to Auto, it may be worth trying to force connect to 2.4Ghz which can present a stronger signal.
 
Hi, it is also possible that the router/hub has a separate SSID for each band. A check of available networks should show this and identify either 2.4Ghz or 5.0Ghz which you can then select for connection. You may need a different access passcode available from whoever is responsible for the router/hub.

Given what you've stated that iPhones are also unable to connect, quite frankly that does sound like a WiFi access point problem, Could be its DHCP pool is full or is acting funky..

Is it communal WiFi provided by the hostel, and shared with a few rooms or dormitories, with people coming and going all the time? I've had similar thing happen at a hostel in Hong Kong once I was staying at, I explained to the management what was happening, and they did actually reboot the WiFi access point. May find same thing in hotels as well.
 
Just curious but is there a practical reason as to why you're so averse to using the 2.4Ghz band connection?
 
Tried the solutions but still no luck...

The WiFi network starts obtaining ip address but then stops as saved
