Dumb questions relating to installation

I'm new to Android and have been reading some posts regarding installation an app. However I'm still puzzled about the installation directory.

I'm using Desire and when I install any new apps, it seems to me that all apps were being installed to the /system/app folder. If not, they have been installed on the ROM instead of the SD card.

Are there any chances to install apps on the SD card? Or how to move installed apps to SD?

P.S. Is root the only solution?

Thanks in advance.

froyo (android 2.2) brings official install-to-sd support - older versions need root access

Thanks. So there IS a limit on the number of apps that I can install on my phone. Plus, what is the purpose of having a SD card slot then ... (I dont listen to musics or watch videos) ... ~_~

of course there's a limit, every device has one - your tera hdd can't hold all the software available for windows

question is, where is that limit, and i haven't heard of anyone having the problem that they've ran out of app space on any android device

as for what good is an extra sd if you don't listen to music or watch videos:
- even without install-to-sd, a lot of apps put their data on the sd, it's only the software binary that can't be installed to the sd (unless rooted or running froyo)
- taking lots of photos / video on your phone's camera eats up the sd
- you can use the phone as a replacement for an usb key to transfer data from one computer to another via usb or wifi

of course if you figure the internal sd is sufficient for you, no one's forcing you to buy an external sd card, but i can't imagine why having the capability (the slot) would be a negative thing
