Duplicate text message problem

So whenever I get a message I always get duplicate text messages. Why is that and is there anyway to fix it?

Possibly check in the Hangouts app settings.

Hangouts > Settings > SMS, then uncheck the box next to Turn on SMS.

I am using Gingerbread and do not have that option, but it worked for a friend of mine who is using a newer version of Android.

I'm not using hangouts. I'm using HelloSMS. So that setting is always off. It's like I'll get a text from a friend saying Hi, then a few seconds later I'll get the same message even know it was only sent once.

That is happening to me as well. I am not sure what is causing it, but I have noticed that it is only happening when other Virgin Mobile customers are texting me.

Doesn't matter what carrier their on. It happens to me.

I have had this happen on previous phones but only when sending to or receiving from ios Devices.
