DVD to .avi software to watch my shows on my phone

I have several seasons of some great TV shows on DVD that I wish to make portable so that I can watch them on my Galaxy S2 at work when I'm bored, on break, sitting on the can, etc.

I have found no software that I can use to take my DVD collections and rip them down to individual episodes. All that I have tried have been loaded with limitations or full of scamware.

Any ideas to help me out and please don't just say to download them via torrents as I would prefer to stay legal and do this myself.

Handbrake looks like it could do it.

I can have a play around with it later, see if it does.

The old version of Handbrake could produce videos in avi format. Since avi is an old container, Handbrake has dropped supporting it.
Anyway, this isn't a problem. Handbrake can make videos in mp4 container that can play fine on Android phones.
