Edge lighting with Android message app

Cannot get edge lighting to work with the android message app. Anyone else have this issue or can maybe recommend a better message app that will work with edge lighting?

Edge lighting only works for apps that can wake the screen when a notification happens like the stock messages app. No matter what I try, I can't get Android Messages to turn on the screen, maybe has to do with the missing permission to appear on top. If I remember correctly, I was never able to get this to work on my Note8 either with Android Messages.
 
yeah not every app you install will be able to take advantage of edge lighting.

i use textra and have no issues. its a much more feature rich app over stock and android messages. give it a try.
 
thats one of the perks they keep for their own messaging app, Samsung Messages, in order to try and steer you to use it.
