email alerting tips

I'm connected to work email via Exchange. I want to be alerted to emails but I get thousands of them, so I only want to be alerted to a small subset of them. Is there a way to go about this?

Setup forward, filter. Not sure client in use. Gmail has tools for that

Using stock client. Your solution will work but I don't want to use Gmail.
