Email alternative?

Hi gang

I was wondering if there is an alternative to the email application on the HTC Desire 2.1? The gmail doesn't support copying attachments to SD and the mail app doesn't seem to check for new mail with a notification in the status bar, I keep having to force it to check which is pointless.
