Email has stopped after typing special characters

I am helping a friend and when she is trying to reply or create an email message in either the preinstalled email client or the Gmail client, if she use any unusual characters, for example comma, exclamation point, quote, at sign, asterisk, or even a space, the client will stop working and generates the error message "Email has stopped". Letters work correctly. This happens with both the on-screen standard Samsung keyboard and the on-screen Gboard keyboard. There is no external keyboard for this device. These special characters type correctly in Word. I have tried rebooting in safe mode and the problem remains. I have also reset everything to standard system defaults and the problem remains. This device was working correctly until a few days ago. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Danny. I should have mentioned, I had rebooted the Galaxy Tab A many times, however I had not cleaned cache. So I went into Settings, Device Maintenance, and cleaned Storage and Memory. I then rebooted the device. Unfortunately this did not fix the problem. Any other thoughts?
