Email in SMS - different alert tone for each contact

For historical reasons (from when I had a LG VX-6000 before I upgraded to a smart phone), I have several email notifications that are sent to my phone by way of <my number>@vtext.com. This is the Verizon email-to-SMS gateway that has been around forever.

The default 'Messaging' app is smart enough to extract the email address from these messages and look it up in my Contacts list, so it shows up as from the proper contact.

I have been looking for an app to alert me with a different tone depending on who sent me the message. I have tried 'Missed Call' and 'Ringo'. Both will let me assign an alert tone to a contact, but when one of these SMS messages is received, both 'Missed Call' and 'Ringo' show the message as from '6245' (which is 'MAIL' transposed with a telephone keypad). As a result, it won't look up the proper alert tone because it won't extract the sender's email address.

Is there a better solution? I could have these messages sent to my Gmail instead, but the Gmail app won't play different tones depending on the sender.

I figured it out!

I uninstalled 'Missed Call'. Then I uninstalled 'Ringo Lite'.

Then I installed 'SMS Popup', and 'Rings Extended' (both free).

SMS Popup will set you configure a separate ring for each contact that sends you SMS messages. It works properly with email sent over SMS, mapping the message to the correct contact based on the email address, just like the 'Messaging' app. Maybe it connects directly to the Messaging app(?)

Thanks for the update. I tried what you have just posted but sms messages sent from an email address still show up as 6245 in the new smspopup. Did you use outlook to fill in the mobile phone number with the appropriate address?

No, my contacts were imported by the Verizon sales person from my old phone. I then synced with my gmail account. My Droid is a new one from Verizon.

What is the name of the contact in your phonebook (does it have an email address for the first and last name) and is there an email address in the mobile phone number space?

Some of these contacts have separate first and last names (usually the person's real name). Other have the family name blank with something descriptive in the first name.

The email address is never entered in the telephone number field. It is only entered in an "email" field, usually with the "other" label. If I view the contact it shows the name, and "Email other" with the email address.

It won't work if you put the email address into the mobile phone number space. It must go in an email space.

I have Droid 2.0. I don't know about version 1.0.
