Email password length on Version 4.1.2

Sorry if this has already been discussed but I can't find any reference to it anywhere. I've just acquired a Galaxy S3 with Version 4.1.2 installed and I've been trying to set up my AOL email account on it.

Having spent half the day banging my head against the wall and getting locked out by AOL 'cos of unusual activity I eventually discovered that the password length in the account setup is limited to 7 characters !!

Unfortunately the password was 9 characters long and when this was entered the setup process was unable to connect to the server. Trim the password to 7 characters and it connects OK (stack overflow fault ??)

Of course now the password is incorrect and the login gets rejected and as a result of numerous failed attempts whilst trying to figure out what was wrong, AOL security monitoring spots the activity and locks the account.

I had to phone AOL to get them to unlock the account and they gave me a temp password to use. Logged into my AOL mail from my laptop and tried to create a new 7 character password but AOL requires a minimum length of 8 characters. GOTCHA - ouch.

Never had this problem with my old Galaxy Ace running version 2.3.6. Is this a cunning plan to force users to use Gmail 'cos this problem didn't occur when I set up that account.

Any help would be most appreciated.

That sounds like an issue with the particular email client. Are you using the default Samsung S3 one? AOL are correct in enforcing a minimum password length, that's for security of course, and they probably specify you must have mixed letters and numbers as well, NO dictionary words. Certainly don't think it's a Google conspiracy, this is more likely a Samsung problem if you're using their email app.

AOL do have their own app, might be worth you using that instead.

Thanks. Downloaded the AOL app & runs fine. Not a great fan of AOL desktop et.al. but it's my principle legacy email server & I'm getting too old & tired to migrate onto another :^(
Don't know whose email client it is. Just part of the standard apps coming with the phone. Having struggled & failed to get Samsung KIES to run on my laptop, I suspect it's probably one of theirs. 21st Century & still getting what appears to be a stack overflow glitch. Man...

PS re Google comment - couldn't lay my hands on a "tongue in cheek" smiley.

Thanks again.
