Help Email Problem

Hi Everyone, I hope you can help me. I love my Nexus 7, but am having a funny problem with it. I will be looking at my emails when they all suddenly disappear!! They don't seem to have gone into trash, they have simply gone off somewhere into the wide blue yonder.......
I'm thinking it might be a setting problem, but have checked my settings and can't see anything obvious.
Any help gratefully received.

Which email app are you using? If gmail i know you can set the amount of times it syncs a day, and for how many days of email it will sync to.
