Email Snafu

Why are my emails not erasing? I've tried the swipe/delete method and the check/garbage can method and the next day, they are back. This is through gmail. Any suggestions????
 
I never bothered to delete any gmail e-mail messages but i did just now. I deleted 3 using the hold until checkmark appears then tap trashcan. Then back to gmail menu tap on trash and empty trash now. It said they are permanently deleted. Did you take that extra step?
