Ok, first step is making sure everything is set up properly in your phone.
Menu-settings-accounts, Gmail... make sure it's set to sync Gmail.
If that doesn't work I'll give you the next step

It just gives me three options. Sync gmail sync contacts and sync calender. I hit the corresponding and it syncs whatever I clicked.

Some people have accidentally turned off the sync function.
Add the power control widget to your screen and make sure your sync button is on.
