The only way I was ever able to see or send emojis on Android was when I used Handcent SMS. It is a good messaging program. (You also have to install the emoji plug-in for Handcent.)
I am sure there are other apps, as well, though some require root.
You might want to join forums and find your phone's section and see if other users of your specific phone have another way.

goSMS Pro is also an option. I know people who rave about it. You can find it here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jb.gosms
I know the Cyanogenmod rom includes emoji's by default in their messenger so if you install a custom rom you should not have to worry about having to install extra apps to handle emoji's.
