Help Emoticons in text messages, I can't see them?

I'm relatively new to Android phones (had mine for about 2-3 months) so this may be a stupid question. On my iPhone I had no problem seeing emoticons in text messages and on Twitter. Now, on my S3, when someone adds an emoticon all I see in place of that emoticon is a little android emoticon. Is there something I need to download that will enable me to see the sent emoticon? Thanks in advance!
 
Try the replacement app 'GO SMS PRO' - that's compatible with the emoji apps on iPhone. Cant comment on FB / Twitter though.
