Entry Level Phone for App Development

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and after a long absence and looking to return to native Android development (Kotlin). Does any have recommendations or links to recs for an inexpensive phone to get started? Is the emulator sufficient and a physical phone not needed?

Thanks

In my opinion a physical device is needed to test your apps. I've seen developers say that they've had code that has ran fine in the emulator, but crashes on a device.

Personally I don't use the emulator anymore. I have devices ranging from android 4.0.4 to 8.1 and test on those.

If you're just starting out then I suppose a single device with at least android 7 and the emulator would suffice.

You should have a popular and rooted device so you could physically try different Android versions on it.

Of course an emulator will still be handy and useful.
