es file explorer accessing call information

I'm a new user to Android and just started using its many apps. I was installing the es file explorer and then I saw that the application needs access to
'device id and call information
Allows the app to determine the phone number and
device IDs, whether a call is active, and the remote
number connected by a call'

Why would a file explorer need this level of access?

Many apps need to determine call status so that if you are on a call it doesn't interrupt the call or inadvertently turn the screen on while you have it to your ear. Mind you that some of the permissions are all inclusive so when you give an app permission to detect call status it can also detect the remote call number even if it doesn't require or use that permission. You can't allow one without the other.

This (old) thread was asking why the app required the privilege in the first place, but that doesn't mean that it has a feature that you can use that makes use of this information.

The privilege might be there to ensure the app doesn't interfere with calls, as suggested above. It might be there due to poor coding (i.e. asking for privileges which it doesn't need). It might be there because ES are spying on you - they have a few privacy issues, and many people ditched them several years ago for that reason.
