once you update (and you should be able to now) to Android 2.2 (froyo) you can use an alphanumeric password.
from the home screen, tap the menu button --> tap settings --> scroll to System updates and tap ----> tap "HTC Software update"
this will get you to Android 2.2. Then after the update, go to security and set your password.
