Excessive background data used by ebay and facebook

Facebook - 200mb in a week.
Ebay - 100mb in a week

Both background data only.

Turned background data off for these apps now but what on earth have they been doing?

I'm assuming if it was an application update it would be play store that would be flagged as data user? (also I have wifi only turned on)

even Motorola Apps is eating away all the data
