ExDialer contacts

I'm using exDialer & Contacts instead of the default Marshmallow apps because of grouping, customization, etc. But I'm having trouble with assigning different ringtones (some that I've created myself and stored on my sd) to contacts. They seem to work for awhile then revert to a ringtone that's not even the system default. I've started from scratch, cleared cache partion , uninstalled/reinstalled exDialer and edited the official Marshmallow/Google contacts.

Does the official app take priority?

I use and prefer ExDialer...
but, when you want to assign properties to a contact,
you will be BEST SERVED by going to the Default Contacts App that came with the phone.

been there, tried all the rest, and always end up having to go back to the default contacts app.
I assign all of my contacts to a Group....
and ExDialer sometimes works with that, and sometimes don't....

but it always finds who I want to talk to fast, and over time, it has become my Default Dialer App....

in preferences, setup ExDialer to use the Default app for editing.

Thanks. I've checked the option to allow other apps to view/edit contacts. I'll see if this makes the ringtones stick. I like everything else about exDialer.

Nope, the ringtones have changed seemingly on their own. I read elsewhere to reset all app permissions and IF the ringtone in question is stored on an SD card (mine are) to use whatever file manager (Solid Explorer) rather than the native Media Mgr to assign the ringtones. Sooo, I'm trying this approach. Next step I guess is a factory reset.
