Expanding service?

So I received a text from VM on Wednesday saying they have started work in my area to improves coverage, speeds, and whatnot.

8682: VMFREEEMSG We're upgrading our nationwide network to give you better coverage, faster speeds and stronger signals. For more info, go to http://msg4u.us/vnva

I asked my brother if he got the same text bit he said he didn't. Did anyone else receive it? I have the Evo and he has the Victory.

I didn't, but I seem to recall getting a message like that a long time ago before Sprint & Virgin rolled out LTE in my area. Where are you? Does Virgin have LTE in your area yet? It sounds like they might only be sending it to certain areas that will have the upgrade in the near future.

Try the Sensorly app or the OpenSignal app from the play store. They both should have up to date comparisons of carriers in your area.

I'm in Connecticut. I can't really tell if LTE is in my area or not. I know a few cities have it.

What I meant was, they may only have sent those texts to customers who live near an area that will be getting LTE soon. Whatever similar text I received a long time ago, may have also only been sent to certain customers, but my area received LTE early on in VM's rollout, so I didn't think any thing of it at the time, as I thought it was just a general information text sent out by VM.
If you don't have an LTE phone ye, it may not benefit you for now (unless they are working on other aspects of service in your area)

Here's the VM coverage map, although I'm not sure it will tell you what areas are coming soon for LTE.

Sprint (which Virgin Mobile uses) is upgrading their 4G LTE network across the country, and should be completed in 2014. Sounds like they are starting to upgrade your area. Some more info:

I just wanted to add, as there are still more than a few people (not necessarily on this board) that do not realize that VMUSA does not just use Sprint, they are Sprint, since they are completely owned by Sprint and have no true relationship with other Virgin Mobile service in other countries other than licensing the Virgin Mobile name.

I found this on VM's site, which is more specific about VM's LTE transition

Carrier produced coverage maps are often inaccurate. The Sensorly maps are updated very frequently with user data and are more accurate. Same with OpenSignal.

This means that Network Vision is getting ready to start or has been in progress for quite sometime. Alcatel Lucent is the OEM responsible for Network Vision in Connecticut, a lot of the work is currently in progress the Middletown area and also the Boston region, 4G LTE is live in both of these areas as well. Most of the towers in Connecticut have had new backhaul installed and you should see an increase in performance in 3G speeds pretty much anywhere you go.
